Year 6 Forming equations worksheets

Write equations from word problems. Two free editable Word sheets with the same questions: one scaffolded, one not. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red.

Download the worksheets

Both sheets have exactly the same questions, so the whole class can be taught together. Print on A4 portrait: every page carries the sheet twice, side by side, so you can cut down the middle and two pupils each get a half to stick in their books. Every question sits in its own box and pupils write their answers in their book. The answers follow the questions in each file: the same sheet again with every answer in red. Both open in Word, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice, so you can change numbers, delete questions or add your own.

Scaffolded sheet

First page of the scaffolded Forming equations sheet, printed twice side by side

Key words highlighted, a hint under each question, and help charts or number lines. For pupils who are working towards the expected standard.

Answer in your book (.docx)

Not scaffolded sheet

First page of the not scaffolded Forming equations sheet, printed twice side by side

The same questions without the extra support. For pupils working at the expected standard: eight fluency questions first, then the reasoning questions.

Answer in your book (.docx)

Sample questions from this step

These are real questions from the first set of the sheet (two from the fluency page, two from the reasoning page). Open each one to see the answer.

  1. Write the equation that each part-whole model shows.
    18y3
    a) ____
    18yy3
    b) ____
    18yyy
    c) ____
    Show the answer

    y + 3 = 18; 2y + 3 = 18; 3y = 18

  2. A shop sells these things. A jumper costs £s. A book costs £b. A hat costs £5. A box of marbles costs £m.
Write an equation for each sentence.
    a) The total cost of a book and a box of marbles is £38.
    ____
    b) The total cost of a box of marbles and 3 jumpers is £38.
    ____
    c) The total cost of a jumper and 2 boxes of marbles is £20.
    ____
    Show the answer

    b + m = 38; m + 3s = 38; 2m + s = 20

  3. Call my number m. I multiply my number by 2 and then subtract 6. The answer is 15.
Which equation matches the story? Write the letter.
    A: 2m + 6 = 15
    B: 2m − 6 = 15
    C: 8m = 15
    D: 2m − 7 = 15
    ____
    Show the answer

    B

  4. A packet of balloons costs £s. A hat costs £5.
The total cost of 2 packets of balloons and a hat is £18.
    Write an equation.
    ____
    Show the answer

    2s + 5 = 18

What is on each sheet

  • Fluency: eight questions that start easy and get harder, with the key skill of the step practised in different ways.
  • Reasoning: questions with pictures, tables and number lines (spot the mistake, true or false and explain, puzzles with one answer, an open-ended task).
  • Answers in the same file: the sheet again with every answer in red, so there is only one file to download.
  • Boba characters give the instructions in speech bubbles. They are decoration only.
